2019 and "If It's to be, It's up to me"

Are Health and Fitness the Same Thing?

The short answer in “No”. Many athletes are amazingly fit and can run faster, jump higher, and do great feats of endurance, however they may be a “ticking waiting time bomb” inside when it comes to their health. Why is this? If you can do all those atheletic endeavours better, longer and further than any one else, they must have healthier bodies?

In Noosa where we live, there lives a World Champion super athlete who is now in his mid 60’s. The first time I saw him he was dressed in an open shirt, and there it was, a long vertical scar down his chest testifying to open heart surgery! If this hero of millions in the world of track and field sports had open heart surgery, then what hope do the rest of us have? When Flo Jo ran her last race, crossed the finish line and dropped dead, the World was stunned. How could this World Champion be the best athelete in the World one minute, and dead the next?

With all diseases there is a process over a life time that eventually leads to a catasphoric life threatening event. In other words coronary arteries gradually, over thirty or fourty years become restricted and eventually completely blocked causing a mayo cardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. Kidney disease progressively develops over a life time, as do strokes and other fatal events.

Being healthy then is also a life time progressive accumulation of day to day, week to week, month to month and year to year series of events. Summed up we call that “Life Style”. The determination of your health is a progressive collection of your “Life Style”, and the parts that make up that life style. Diet, exercise, rest and relaxation, sound central nervous system and flexible spine, and a good mental attitude. Being healthy is determined from the day to day proactive elements of our life style.
