CHIROPRACTIC'S 123'rd BIRTHDAY:

This month (September 18th), marks the 123’rd anniversary of chiropractic care.                                                         How long have spinal adjustments been around? Therapeutic spinal manipulation has existed for over 2500 years, though they didn’t call it ‘Chiropractic’ in Ancient Greece, Egypt, or Russia. It was simply acknowledged as a remarkable way to produce positive change in the body. Socrates (469-399 B.C.) advised, “If you would seek health, look first to the spine.” Hippocrates (470-357 B.C.) made similar recommendations, saying “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is requisite for many diseases.” He went on to invent a mechanism called “the rack”, used to stretch the spine. Later, Claudius Galen (130-202 A.D.) discovered the relationship between the nervous system, spine and well being. He became known as the “Prince of Physicians” after he cured a prominent Roman scholar of right hand paralysis by aligning his neck. Galen wrote, “Look to the nervous system as the key to maximum health.”

When did Chiropractic officially come into existence in the modern era?                                                                          In 1895 – a man called Daniel David Palmer adjusted the spine of Harvey Lillard. Harvey’s deafness was cured via a spinal adjustment. Chiropractic isn’t a miraculous cure for treating disability & disease, it is miraculous for removing interference from the spine and nervous system, which can restore optimal function, health and well being. This often offers profound improvements in unexpected places. Palmer called his therapy ‘Chiropractic’, which literally means ‘done by hand’. His methods and teachings gained increasing popularity across the globe and today over 3 million people seek Chiropractic care each year in Australia alone. Chiropractic is the second largest health care profession in the World today.

Todays Chiropractic Doctor is well educated and has an individual and disciplined approach to health care.    Spinal misalignements don’t just cause pain and sickness, but when freed by specific adjustments allow the body to heal itself from within and naturally. No pills, potions, elixers, or surgery. That discipline is reserved for Medical Doctors who treat disease , pain and illness. Chiropractic doctors are “health care” practitioners who through freeing stuck (subluxated) spinal joints leave the body to heal itself, naturally and from within. There is no competition between the two leading health professions. They are as individually distinctive as dentist is from a hairdresser!
